La Roche Cafe - St Kilda

La Roche Cafe
185 Acland St
St Kilda
T: 9534 1472

Stopped in here for lunch with my family... My aunt and uncle got burgers, which I have pictured here before, mum go the eggs and bacon, a special for $7, she said it was good eggs and bacon... I went for the chicken parma and beer for $12 (sans beer, which couldnt be replaced for anything else according to the waitress), I thought the parma would be small because it was a special, but alas it came out and was as big as my plate!!! Basically a whole chicken... The next surprise wqas that I ate it all! Was absolutely stuff afterwards, but glad I was ravenous when we arrived! It was pretty damn good! Service was fast but one of the waitresses had a bit of attitude...

The Wackness - Melbourne International Film Festival

The Wackness
Melbourne International Film Festival
www.sonyclassics.com/thewackness/

I had heard a lot about this film and it was on our list... When I saw it was playing at the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) I booked our tickets immediately... I wasn't quite sure what to expect, and what I got was greatness...

A feel good film set in the mid nineties in Manhattan... Any film shot in the streets of Manhattan automatically engage me because I love that place, and all of the shots in central park were just delightful... The story, one of friendship and love, makes you remember how intense high school love was... The music was mid nineties hip hop, when it was really good, at times the music took away from the dialogue as its so rare to hear tunes that you love in the theatre (I doubt that this was problematic for most people), these tracks remind me of being a teenager in the mid nineties when my then boyfriend introduced me to hip hop...

Some great acting, believable characters, Josh Peck and Ben Kingsely give great performances... The only weirdness was method man giving his character a scary attempt at a Caribbean accent, which threw me, every time he was on... I am usually spellbound by his undeniable charisma, but not this time...

There was some powerful imagery, and humuorous dialogue, but I found the MIFF goers enthusiastic belly laughs at every subtle punch line annoying... There was definite humour but I have heard less laughs at proper funny comedies... Weird...

All in all, I loved this film, will definitely watch it again and suggest you do too!

I love Babble, used to spend many a Saturday afternoon here with Leigh drinking their divine hot chocolate and watching the world go by... Have eaten breakfast here a fair bit and have never had a bad egg, so for Kellys birthday, Cricket and I took her here for brunch... Not a mistake, we all had eggs benedict or florentine and they were all yummy... Mostly the service was good, but by the time it was full (about 20 minutes after we got there) things started taking too long, waited what seemed like an eternity for my hot chocolate, but on the second ask it appeared quite quickly and was well worth it, their hot chocolates are always good!

Wicked the musical

Wicked the musical
Regent Theatre

Mark and I bought tickets to Wicked for mum and Shane for their birthdays... I had wanted to see this since planning our first trip to NYC in 2006, so it was fantastic to hear that it was coming here... I got tickets the minute they went on sale, and due to my diligence we were 9 rows from the front (left)... The great thing about being this close was seeing the actors make up, expressions and costumes...

The opening and first 30 or so minutes I wasn't blown away, in fact I was wondering just what exactly we were doing here... but by the close of the first half it was clear that this show was destined to be greatness... The last scene in the first half had the whole theatre in uproar! The second half went from strength to strength, the story was involved, cast were singing and dancing their hearts out and it was completely engaging...

At the end I just wished I had the Wizard of Oz film at hand as I was, and still am desperate to see it again... The play changed everything you think you know about that film!

Mum and Shane took us here before 'Wicked' Saturday night... Mostly due to it being next door to the Regent Theatre, and they had eaten there before and enjoyed it... All the food we saw come out of the kitchen looked divine, so my expectations rose as I cruised the menu and saw lots of yummy options... Overall the service was great, very attentive, even if the waitress was a bit inappropriately tactile... Would definitely go back when I am in the mood for seafood and give it another go...

Smoked salmon Caesar salad, mums order, was lovely, I had a bit of this after mine due to the lack of salad available with my dish and it was gooooood...

Marks pumpkin and fetta risotto, he enjoyed this... It was sweeter then expected due to the sweet chilli sauce...

My order, the Atlantic salmon with a mushroom risotto cake and tomato balsamic salad... I was impressed with the amount of salmon on my plate but they could hardly call a little bit of chopped tomato which appeared like garnish to be called a salad, the salad was a big part of the appeal for me, and there was hardly any... The risotto cake was divine, all in all for $39.00 there could have been a little more food there...

Shane's roast duck, he loved it...

Life with My Sister Madonna

Life with My Sister Madonna
by Christopher Ciccone & Wendy Leigh
www.amazon.com

Cruising through Borders on Wednesday looking for a gift for Mark I noticed this book on sale... I had intentions of reading it from the first moment I heard about it, but for some reason never thought it would be on sale over here... So I snapped it up within seconds and spent the rest of my break reading it... Finished it today and must say that I thouroughly enjoyed it...

To all the haters and media saying how negative and spiteful it is, I disagree... I see it as a siblings journey, yes a sibling to one of the most famous women on earth, but it is his journey of finding out who he is apart from just being her brother... The moments where it feels angry or sad its understandable, people always hurt eachother... Overall it hasnt affected my view of Madonna who I always considered quite cold and manufactured, but she was still the queen of the dancefloor to me when it mattered most...

I enjoyed it, and kept trying to steal moments to finish it... It feels like an honest account of Christophers life, even though Im not a fan of him, the way he comes across in interviews is creepy... If you a fan of Madonna its a recommended read, a more touching account of her life then the other unauthorised biographies out there and probably a more honest glimpse of her world then she would dare let us see herself...

New Mic Order @ Workshop Bar...

Yeah yeah. What’s good folks?

Just a quick post to give you all the heads-up on a new regular club night I’m involved with (I originally posted this over on my blog [ http://runtheline.blogspot.com/ ], but Corrie suggested I also mentioned it here).

It’s a new UK Hip Hop / Dancehall / Grime night being thrown at the Workshop Bar on Elizabeth Street in Melbourne’s CBD on Saturday 2nd August – remember, get down early to avoid the queue.

I’ll be holding it down on the UK Hip Hop tip, Mexi will be spinning a mix of UK Hip Hop and Dancehall, and Kamo will be representing with a Grime set.

It’s also the official Melbourne launch of ‘An England Story – The Culture Of The MC In The UK’, and we’ll have giveaways from our sponsors Inertia and Soul Jazz Records, so make sure you come down and represent.

In the mean time, Mexi and I will be passing through Sheriff Rosco’s Top Billin’ Radio show on 3RRR – 102.7 FM - tonight (July 25th) to promote the jam, and will be dropping some UK Hip Hop heat, so tune in from 10PM.

Cheers,

Mark 563

Mum and I went to the Yering Station farmers market on Sunday and on to a lunch out in Lilydale, in between appointments we stopped at this cafe... Mum has been here a few times and loves it there... I can see why, its also a massive native nursery and has a lovely big gift shop attached... I was starving and in desperate need of a snack so when I saw the raspberry and passion fruit muffin I was sorted... The muffin (unfortunately) came heated, with a side shot of custard, which is a nice thought, its just that I don't want heated muffins, if I wanted it heated I would have asked, which leads me to believe that it was probably stale or something... And a bit pricey at $5.90! Lovely environment, not lovely muffin, was more passion fruit pips then raspberry, wouldn't order another muffin there...

I know its late, but Monday night before the sneaker swap meet we went to the laneways for some dinner... I was craving salmon but couldnt find any that wasnt smoked, so switched to a meat craving... Went back to Andiamos, as we loved the food there last time... Mark ordered the margherita (surprise!) and I ordred the beef burger, which, when it came, was MASSIVE! Couldn't get my mouth around it! Service was crap, which sucked... Might try somewhere different bext time...

Batman: The Dark Knight - Preview Mon 14th July - Crown Casino

Batman: The Dark Knight - Preview Mon 14th July - Crown Casino

We went along to the preview to Batman: The Dark Knight at Village in Crown Casino... I had pretty high expectations and to be honest not all of them were met... Most of the plot was pretty predictable, I couldn't stand the way that Batman spoke, in fact I didn't think that Christian Bale was a convincing Batman... The fact is, I was there to see Heath Ledger as the Joker, and he did not disappoint... It probably would have been better had they not focused on so much else and kept the story tight about him and Batman... He was a pleasure to watch, crazy and funny, my kind of bad guy...

Some of the sequences were an absolute delight on the eye (the first one was awesome), and others just a bit too fast, overall it was a very watchable film, but I never recommend sitting in a general admission chair for 2.5 hours... Checked my watch at least 3 times which is usually a sign... Harvey 'Two Face' was a waste of time, they could have cut him out and saved a half hour of my life...

Glad I didn't pay for this, not the sort of movie I would usually want to see, but Heath Ledgers performance made every minute in that chair worthwhile...

Wax Museum Party at the Blue Tile Lounge

We went along to Ivens last hurrah before heading off on the Vans Warped Tour USA on a very chilly Friday night... We arrived early as I turn into a pumpkin very quickly these days... I love the Blue Tile Lounge for its intimacy, but it was freezing cold and felt more like the Antartic lounge! The first DJ was playing a strange mash up of music, but at around 9.30 we got some hip hop which was warmly welcomed, music to bounce to means the blood flows and warmth is achieved! Good to catch up with mates, though we missed Ivens set, I am assured that it was greatness...

Kelly and I went here for dinner before Claudines exhibition... I am a bit of a fan of vegie bar and knew what I wanted before I arrived... Luckily got a seat straight away as it was quite full, service was fast and friendly... We both ordered the vegie roast, with an array of vegetables roasted with garilc, rosemary and other herbs and spices with hummus and tzatziki and crusty bread too... The dips and bread were divine, and probably enough to fill me, but I powered through and ate most of my vegetables which were divine! If you are a vegetarian, or even just open to non meat, this spot has a great range, and is yummy!

Soul Mama - St Kilda

Soul Mama - St Kilda
www.soulmama.com.au
St Kilda Seabaths
Jacka Blvd
95253338

This is one of mine and Marks favourite places to eat food, so when it hit one year of Mark not smoking cigarettes we went there to celebrate! Its a lovely walk by the sea to get to the restaurant, though last night it was pretty cold! What is nice about Soul Mama, apart from the lovely view of the ocean, is that you can see all of the yummy veggie options, and although service is usually lacking, its very easy to get your meal... 4 out of the 4 dishes I tried last night were good, while Mark thought his Tandoori veg was not so good liked 3 out of 4... The mushroom and rice balls were the highlight for me, the mushroom stroganoff next, chick pea curry close behind and then the lentil curry... I ate far too much food and felt a bit bloated for at least a couple hours afterwards! Badness... It is also really inexpensive, We got 2 medium bowls and a beer for Mark and it was $38 plus tip... Nice...
